Today I’m meeting Spencer Neville in Venice, California. I discovered Spencer on Ozark, where he had a breakout performance as Zach, the wealthy smooth talker that seduces Charlotte on Labor Day Weekend in his flashy speedboat aptly named "Pocket Change". Spencer explains that "Zach was created from a character study was engrossed in for 3.5 years of college. Douchebaggery level: max"! His Ozark performance is testament to his amazing skills. In real life Spencer is the sort of guy that laughs at himself and doesn't take life too seriously and is an adventurer at heart. If you haven't seen Ozark yet, you need to stop what you're doing and watch it now! Follow Spencer and all of his shenanigans at spencerneville_13.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Spencer. Can I interview your closet? Absolutely, come on in! Feel free to remove your shoes, I'm kind of a clean freak.
What’s your favorite pair of jeans and where did you find them? I have a pair of hunter green Uniqlo pants I wear often, but my favorite pair at the moment I got at a thrift store a few months ago. I was looking for an old pair of light vintage jeans that were still slim fitting, and wasn’t having much luck until a friend of mine recommended looking for them in the women’s section at this thrift store. He was actually wearing a pair of Calvin Klein vintage jeans that were “women’s” and I had no idea…so I went and looked and within five minutes, found the perfect pair. They’re the coolest pants I’ve ever owned. Pants are pants in my mind, and the fit is great, so there you go. I wear mom jeans. Proudly.
Do you prefer movies, tv or books? What’s your most recent favorite(s)? I love the new age of tv where we are essentially having these series that are more like 10-hour movies. True Detective (season 1) and Big Little Lies, for example, were fantastic. Another favorite of the year is The Handmaids Tale. But I still love movies, and just re-watched Hell or High Water the other day, a movie from this past year that was immediately in my top 5 of all time I think. But that list changes every other day. I also love reading, three of my favorite from the past year were “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, “The Shining” by Stephen King, and “Norwegian Wood” by Haruki Murakami.
What did you wear the last time you went out to lunch? My favorite jeans (the mom ones), an old gray t-shirt, and my off white vans.
Where did you go and what did you order? Sage Vegan Bistro in LA. It’s my favorite and I get the Pasta Pesto Greens Bowl every time.
What is your favorite beverage of choice? Coffee all day every day. I brew in my French press every morning that I can, and almost always have another iced espresso from my favorite local coffee spot, Alana’s in Mar Vista. But if you meant alcoholic…definitely a good red wine, preferably Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon.
What is your personal theme song/anthem? Outlaw State of Mind by Chris Stapleton.
Where was the last place you traveled to? A wildlife refuge organization called Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CiWY) in Bolivia. About six hours north of Santa Cruz, where you fly into.
What was your favorite part of the trip and what were you wearing at the time?
I was sworn to secrecy about my favorite part of the trip, so ill give you number two on the list. A couple of my buddies and I were building a cacao fermenting/drying structure for the organization to utilize, and it was such an amazing experience. I got to meet a few of the animals that they have there at the refuge, and that was really really cool, but I think my (second) favorite part of it was that there was no cell service or wifi, so it gave me the opportunity to unplug for 8 days and just experience nature and connect with the volunteers that were there at the camp. I can’t wait to go back!
Who do you follow on Instagram for style inspiration? No one in particular, I see random things every now and then that inspire a new take on a piece of my personal style, but for the most part I just do my own thing. I like GQ magazine and their articles on what’s “cool” at the moment/season, but I just realized I don’t follow them on instagram so that doesn’t really answer your question...
If you were a car what would you be? An old pick up truck, preferably a Chevy from the 70’s.
If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner who would you invite and why? I’d have to say Elon Musk because he is fucking brilliant and is changing the world with his multiple ventures/companies, and he can probably have one hell of a conversation about all of that. Which is really cool. And I’d love to be his friend so I can hitch a ride on one of his space ships someday. I also really like Mark Ruffalo, and I can’t wait to work with him in some capacity, if I may be so lucky.
Fill in the blanks regarding your closet!
The last thing I bought online was (honestly no idea when I last bought a piece of clothing online) but I prefer to shop at an actual store to get pretty much everything, I like to try it on and see the fit.
I spent too much money on my Red Wing boots (but they’re also the greatest purchase ever because they’re my best wardrobe piece and they’ll last forever) but saved a lot of money on random sweatshirts/t-shirts that I got at a thrift store for a fraction of their real value.
I would love to be on the cover of this magazine fashion wise, GQ and wear this some cool rugged t-shirt, jeans, and boots look, but also some fancy Tom Ford suit in the spread inside the magazine.
I wear this fragrance Aēsop Tacit but I love smelling this fragrance on someone else whatever my lady is wearing (I don’t really go around smelling any other people haha).
