Today I'm interviewing Nik Dodani in Los Angeles. Nik Dodani is the breakout star behind Zahid on Netflix's original series Atypical and the upcoming movies Strangelove (Netflix) and Behold My Heart. Nik is also a standup comedian and a politically minded graphic designer. See more of his work here and be sure to follow him @nikdodani.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Nik. Can I interview your closet? Yeah! Sorry about the mess...
On Atypical, you have some sweet lady charming moves. You give Sam a lot of good advice about what to say and do, but what style advice would you give to someone trying to up their dating game? Honestly, I would advise people to look very closely at what Zahid says and how he dresses, and then do the exact opposite. That being said, try to channel Zahid’s confidence. Confidence is sexy
You’ve worn some amazing floral prints on the red carpet and don’t seem to be afraid of pattern and color which is why I was so excited to interview you. Who inspires how you dress for the red carpet? I love patterns! Especially floral patterns, and I think that's my Indian roots shining through. My parents were always the best dressed at parties and weddings (or weirdest dressed, depending on who you ask), and I’ve defintiely been influenced by them.
What’s your favorite pair of jeans? Where and why did you buy them? My black 510’s by Levi's. Got them from Macy’s, my go-to department store, because a solid pair of black jeans is a necessity for every closet. I’d like to add that I hate blue jeans. If people stopped wearing blue jeans I think the world would be a better place.
Do you prefer television or movies? Which if any movies or shows has inspired your style? I prefer TV because I love that you can get lost in a whole different universe for years and years. The latest show to inspire me stylistically is Dear White People on Netflix. The costume designer on that show killed it. Doesn’t hurt that every single cast member is stupidly beautiful and can pull off any outfit thrown on them.
What did you wear the last time you went out? Where did you go and what did you order? I wore my black 510’s (duh), a floral t-shirt that I stole from my boyfriend (sorry, Michael), and shitty flip flops from Ross (don’t @ me). I went to a cafe down the street from my apartment and ordered a chicken sandwich and dirty chai.
What song keeps showing up the most on your playlist? I just ran my Spotify through an app that analyzes what you listen to and it looks like my most-played song of the last six weeks is “Keep Me” by Khalid. What a dude. Can’t believe he’s only 19.
If you could go on a $5,000 shopping spree anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you buy? As someone who frequently engages in retail therapy, this question is too overwhelming.
Who is the most interesting person you follow on Instagram? The poet Nayyirah Waheed. Shoutout to my friend (and badass activist) Nimisha for introducing me to her.
What is something one of your friends has in their closet that you want to borrow and never return? My sister has pairs on pairs of the comfiest socks with the silliest patterns. I would steal them but the inevitable punishment isn’t worth it.
If you were a food, what would you be? Eggplant parmesean.
Fill in the blanks regarding your closet!
I should throw away my old Ravenclaw t-shirt that doesn’t fit anymore but I could never part with it.
I spent too much money on my Drifter trench coat but saved a lot of money on my floral Doc Martins (yay for mom and pop stores).
I would love to be on the cover of Rolling Stone wearing Hiroki Nakamura. .
I wear Calvin Klein Man but I love smelling Jimmy Choo Man on someone else.
