Laws of Style by Lawson
Today I’m meeting Lawson Mpame in Dublin. Lawson is the founder of menswear blog Laws of Style. He has always had a keen interest in Men’s Style, having developed his own signature style, something that he started sharing over his Instagram account and blog. He has caught the eye of some huge brands and thus collaborated with them. What started off as a hobby on social media for the budding creative has evolved into a full time passion and something he is pursuing as full time career. Follow him @lawsofstyle_.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Lawson. Can I interview your closet? Of course!
You’ve scored some amazing collaborations with the likes of Tommy Hillfiger and Louis Copeland and Sons. What were the highlights of working with these teams? The Highlights of collaborating with such huge brands was being given full creative control on the concept of the collaboration and the content. My main highlight from Louis Copeland definitely has to be creating the amazing the amazing content with my team for the fall campaign collaboration titled ‘Fall is here’. Its definitely my most creative project I have worked on to date!
Who’s someone you admire and would like to work with? I really admire the Godfather of male blogging, Adam Gallagher, and I one day hope to meet and work with this guy. I love his work because it looks like something you would see in GQ and the sheer creativity of his collaboration campaigns leave me in awe!
What do you think are some of the biggest differences between how men shop and style themselves in the UK versus the US? The biggest differences I seem to have noticed are that tailoring seems to be getting a revival of sorts in the USA based on the guys I follow. Be it 80s, modern or vintage with a modern twist, it seems as though they are keeping the dapper gents movement alive. Over in the UK there’s a massive shift towards the streetstyle look and the “HypeBeast” movement, which I love as I do love my streetstyle just as much as my classy look.
What is your favorite thing about living in Dublin? My favourite thing about living in Dublin is the social scene. Having grown up in Dublin I have witnessed its growth and the emergence of all these cool bars/ restaurants with a creative twist and not to mention the vast amount of classy bars were I can don my dapper style without feeling out of place like Zozimus or Farrier and Draper.
What’s your favorite suit? Where and why did you buy it? My favourite suit definitely has to be my first ever Double Breasted Louis Copeland suit that I bought before I even started working with them and it so happened to be the spark and start of a great relationship.
Do you prefer television or movies? Which if any movies or shows has inspired your style? I prefer TV shows. I love binging haha. Suits definitely has inspired my style a whole lot, I mean look at Harvey Spectre the guy just oozes elegance and class.
What did you wear the last time you went out? Last time I went I wore and all black ensemble. Black Fedora, Black turtleneck with trousers, black leather biker jacket and these two tone black leather and grey suede double strap monks.
Where did you go and what did you order? I went to a night that a great friend of mine hosts in one of the bars I mentioned earlier Farrier and Draper and I had a Jameson Black Barrel on the rocks.
What song keeps showing up the most on your playlist? The song Blessings by Chance the Rapper from his latest album The Coloring Book.
If you could go on a $5,000 shopping spree anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you buy? I would definitely do Milan, I love Italy! I would definitely go buy myself some bespoke Italian suits and bespoke Italian loafers!
Who is the most interesting person you follow on Instagram? The most interesting person on Instagram definitely has to be Will Smith. The guy gives me so much inspiration!
What is something one of your friends has in their closet that you want to borrow and never return? My friend has the original Louis Vuitton X Kanye West collaboration sneakers that I would definitely “borrow”!
Who would star as you in a movie about your life and most importantly, what would they wear? It would definitely be Michael B. Jordan, one of my favourite actors and a great one at that! He would definitely show up in one of the scenes in a purple velvet smoking jacket with a crisp white shirt with a collar chain, black trousers and some really slick black tassel loafers.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? I would love to trade places with Mr. Tom Ford so I can wear all the amazing Tom Ford pieces and better yet design some African inspired Tom Ford pieces!
Fill in the blanks regarding your closet!
I should throw away these Massimo Dutti single strap monks but I could never part with my camouflage safari jacket.
I spent too much money on this camel colour Double Breasted jacket but saved a lot of money on my Crombie double Breasted overcoat. Got it for €125 and the original price was €1600!
I would love to be cast in Milan Fashion Week for this designer Dolce and Gabbana.
I wear Tom Ford Oud Wood Intense but I love smelling Tom Ford Black on Orchid on someone else!
