Today I’m meeting Jos Carmichael in a vegan burger restaurant called Hank burger in Paris. Jos is a runway model and I painted when he walked for Concept Korea at Pitti Uomo. Jos is a vegan feminist and a great guy to hang around. Follow him @jos_carmichael.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Jos. Can I interview your closet? Yes.
I first discovered you when you walked for Concept Korea for Pitti Uomo. You got to wear an amazing trench coat. What was it like working with the Concept Korea team? It was incredible! I don't know if you could tell but it was my first ever show so I was really excited and at the same time quite scared. Thankfully, the Concept Korea team was really kind and thoughtful and I felt very comfortable working with them.
After the show did you have time to enjoy Florence? Yes. The show finished around 1 in the afternoon I think and as I had another show the next day in Florence I got the rest of the day off. I went sight-seeing with a fellow model from my agency, Florence is such an amazing place and I would love to return. I also managed to eat some classic Italian pizza while I was there which made my day!
You also got an amazing casting for Paris Fashion Week with Alexander McQueen. I’m sure there was a lot of competition for this casting. How do you cope with the stress of the casting process? During casting week we have so much to do and so many castings to go to that we don't really have time to think about being stressed. The hardest part for me is finishing in the evening and over thinking what I could have done better, what I should not have done etc. For Alexander McQueen it was quite special as they wanted to cut my hair really short. I accepted that even though I was quite nervous about the change. Thankfully they decided they liked it quite long, which is how I prefer it and how I got to wear it during the show.
Did you celebrate after the show? I was so exhausted from the show and the whole fashion week that I celebrated by going home and watching films, eating popcorn and drinking beer with my flatmate!
What’s your favorite coat or jacket? Where and why did you buy it? My favorite coat is a beige trench coat made by London Fog that I found in a second hand vintage shop in Paris. I love trench coats because it's a timeless piece of wardrobe. This one in particular has a very nice fit and outlines nicely my figure. I also love the fact that trench coats have so much history behind it, from the first explorers wearing the classic Burberry trench to English football hooligans.
Are you a morning or night person? What do you wear early in the morning or late at night? I would consider myself a morning person. I want to make the most of the day as possible. The moment I get up I throw on my old oversized Abercrombie and Fitch hoody that I've had for like forever along with some comfy tracksuit bottoms and a warm winter hat.
What did you wear the last time you went out to dinner? I was wearing my beige trench coat, underneath I had a black turtle neck jumper on from Celio, a pair of black skinny jeans from Zara and second hand black Dr. Marten boots.
Where did you go and what did you order? I went to a lovely vegan restaurant called Anna Loka in Cardiff. I had their burger filled with onion rings, a seitan patty, guacamole, vegan cheese, jalapenos... This accompanied by sweet potato fries and homemade vegan garlic mayo. Yum!
What is your favorite beverage of choice? I would say a good old english pint. Apart from that I do love a homemade smoothie. I always make myself one in the morning with frozen bananas and berries, flax seeds, dates and orange juice.
What music do you like to dance to? I've been following Ed Sheeran's work from the beginning. At parties I like to dance to artists like Flume, Alo Wala, Brodinski. I'm also into rap music (Stormzy, Black the Ripper, Eminem...) and if you are into french rap, I would suggest listening to an upcoming talent from Paris called Akan.
Where was the last place you traveled to? I was in Cardiff last week visiting my girlfriend Louise who studies there. It's such a lovely city, very young and dynamic, I love it there.
What souvenirs did you buy? I'm not that into material souvenirs. I take so many pictures and keep hold of all the receipts from museums, atractions, cinemas, bars, restaurants etc.
Who in your family member has great style and how would you describe them? My older brother Cameron has a great look. He has more of a contemporary street style, while I'm more into vintage. When we were younger I would always try and steal his clothes, even though he would never let me. I guess it all comes down to my mom though, who in my eyes has always been very stylish.
What is something one of your friends has in their closet that you want to borrow and never return? My girlfriend has these gorgeous African tuareg inspired silver rings that I would love to have. If I ever get the chance to travel to Burkina Faso or Mali I would love to find genuine ones.
Who would star as you in a movie about your life and most importantly, what would they wear? I would say Eddie Redmayne. I've been told I look a lot like him. Even if I didn't look like him, I find his work amazing, I really loved him in the Danish Girl by Tom Hooper. He would wear a mix of grey and beige tones, clothes with pure clean cuts. A mix of new, stylish in fashion clothes with a hint of vintage.
Fill in the blanks regarding your closet!
I should throw away this an old track suit bottom that has a couple of holes but I could never part with my warm winter hats (I've got at least six).
I spent too much money on jumpers but saved a lot of money on wallets, as I've kept the same one my girlfriend gave me back when we were 15.
I would love to be cast in Milan Fashion week for this show Gucci. I absolutely adore their clothes + they announced that they are going fur free this spring, something that is very close to my heart.
I don't wear any fragrance but I love smelling this fragrance on someone else Flower Party by Yves Rocher.
