Today I’m meeting Jason Lai of Bravo TV’s Best Room Wins at Felix Trattoria, which has the best Pasta in Venice Beach. Jason is partner and principal designer of L2 Interiors, which has been featured on CBS Open House, Tastemade Home and Elle Décor. He also was invited to participate in Pasadena Showcase House- the biggest showcase house in the nation. It’s no surprise that his amazing style and effervescent personality landed him an opportunity to compete on Bravo. Check out the show on May 8th at 9pm eastern and be sure to follow him @jasonlai.interiordesigner.
Do you find that your preferences as a designer inspire how you get dressed? Yes, absolutely, people judge the way you look, I always dress trendy and fashionable because who will hire someone to do their home if you can’t even dress yourself?
What are some of your favorite places to visit to find inspiration? Traveling inspires me, I try to do it as much as possible. Who doesn’t want an excuse to travel!
I’m obsessed with your hair! Can you tell me about where you go to get it cut and what products you like to use? LOL, thank you! It’s my thing hahaha large and in charge! I blow dry it every single night and I use Big Sexy Hair Powder Play and spray it down with my fav hair spray- Got 2b Mess-Merizing Texturizing hairspray.
Who are some of your favorite interior designers and architects? I’m ashamed to say this but I don’t have anyone specific in mind I just love design but I kinda just do my thang.
What are you tired of seeing in terms of interior design and what would you like to see more of? Personally, I’m not a beige kinda designer. I also don’t work within a specific style such as only minimalism and instead try to cohesively merge different styles. I would love to see more non traditional design, think outside of the box designs. Design is so subjective. I love being creative!
If money where no object what would you splurge on for your personal living space? I would splurge on an amazing rug that can last forever! I think it’s easy to add fun pops of color with throw pillows and other accessories that are affordably priced.
Gucci, Hermes, Fendi Casa and Giorgio Armani have launched some amazing home collections or products. Which fashion designer or house would you like to see make a home collection or design a boutique hotel? I love mixing all the designers together, why does it have to be just one? It’s boring :) But I do love myself Gucci, Hermes and LV accessories - that’s my jam! I also think that Hermes is so classic and there’s nothing better than a bright orange box so I could totally picture an Hermes boutique hotel!
What song(s) will you never delete from your playlist? Fight Song by Rachel Platten! It’s an emotional song about relationships that helps me to be positive about things. I listen to it when I go hiking. And I have her t shirt! I’m totally that girl crying in the audience!
Speaking of which is hiking how you stay in such great shape? Yes I love to hike in Laurel Canyon and I bring my dogs Pixel a terrier mix that is the sensitive one that can read people’s energy and never barks. He’s always friendly and a little cuddle buddy. My other dog Lakota is a ditzy German shepard mix that doesn’t like to be alone! Needs to be with me or my fiancé!
If you could host a dinner party and invite anyone in the world who would be on your guest list and what would you serve? I love Chrissy Teigen, I’m obsessed with her! (I want to be her so badly because...well, John Legend is her husband!) But honestly, Asians are really having a moment right now! Chrissy is just so real and raw. Her Instagram stories are so natural and funny, she has a cooking line now at Target and is really making a name for herself! I’m feeling especially inspired by women in media and business. I'd use this dinner party as a platform to empower people of all races, religions, backgrounds, gender identities and I think Chrissy would be the perfect celebrity for it! Powerful women, like Chrissy and so many others are really going to change the world! I strongly support the equality and social justice movements we are seeing here in LA and around the world. For dinner, I would serve my family’s famous soup dumplings and Dim Sum, a nod to my Chinese heritage and my family.
Also what would you wear to the dinner party? i’m a big fan of Zara, I like things that are super trendy. I don’t wear v necks but i love loud pants turtlenecks, scarves, bandannas tied in a cute bow. I wore plaid pants for my photo shoot and on the Bravo show!
I heard that you love wine! What are some of your favorite types/vineyards to enjoy in the spring and summer? I love Santa Barbara, I’m getting married there in Nov 9th of this year. In love with a town called Los Olivos. i’m even members of Zinke, Fess Parker, Barieri Wineries.
Where are your favorite places to shop, see art and go out to eat in LA? I love going furniture shopping at more of the affordable stores like Z Gallerie, West Elm, CB2 because they make it easy to update your style at home. I grew up in a foodie family, everyone owned restaurants, in the San Gabriel Valley. I also love pasta and have been to popup restaurant events in the Venice community where you get put on a guest list and eat family style. Communal tables are fun for me because I love meeting new people! I actually met one of my best friends and the officiant of my wedding on a plane to Minnesota. I could literally make friends with a brick wall!
Fill in the blanks!
The last thing I bought on vacation was a Louis Vouitton dufflel bag when I traveled to Portugal (I got it tax free- saved like $800!)
I spent too much money on clothes but saved a lot of money on food because I love to cook my own food! Recipes stress me out so I just cook by feel with whatever I have in the refrigerator or watch Bon Apetit videos to make something fancy.
I would love to wear super cute blazer, black turtleneck and loud pants and louboutins and appear in this publication Architectural Digest.
I wear this fragrance I have over 40 bottles of cologne at home- done by what color I wear, today I have on Prada L’homme l’eau, but I love to smell this fragrance on someone else issey Miyake but I don’t wear it myself because it brings back memories- I love how it smells on guys or girls... it smells good on everyone!
