Today I’m meeting Franco Lacosta at Freds at Barneys Downtown, where he is presenting his gender neutral SS18 line while celebrating the launch of Platinum Poire Royale, a VIP, invite only, power couple matchmaking service for gay men who are looking for a secure and discreet way to meet others of equal caliber, where he now serves as the Creative Director. Franco’s revolutionary SS18 line features textiles that are jubilant and uplifting- a direct response to a troubling political moment in American History. Leave it to Franco, who is a fireball of love and energy to inspire us to throw gender norms out the window when we dress up! He cast models of all sizes, origins and orientations to enjoy some vino and the famous Freds' French fries reminding us all of the beauty of good company and fashionable friends!
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Franco. Can I interview your closet? Of course!
Your love inspired collection arrived at an important time! The textile prints are so magical and clearly come from a place of love. Can you explain how your textiles where created for this collection? The textiles were inspired by the chaos and negativity that is going on today's world press and the media. I decided to use voice, passion and love of art to start creating images art forms and colors that would elevate The Human Experience to a higher vibration.
I couldn’t help but notice you are especially photogenic and great at styling from head to toe! Can you give me some tips for being camera ready for streetstyle photographers? I did not know I was photogenic until I went to Milan for my internship and was asked by my mentor the late Gianfranco Ferre, to try on some clothes for a fitting and they decided to use me for the campaign. My advice would be to love yourself to learn your angles learn about lighting ,don't be a fashion victim instead be a fashion connoisseur always wear what looks good on your body and project confidence and happiness because true beauty comes from within.
What’s your favorite suit and where did you find it? My favorite suit is an Yves Saint Laurent red jacket that was made for me by Marie Christine head seamstress of his atelier in the 90's.
Do you prefer movies, tv or books? What’s your most recent favorite(s)? Movies. The Battle of the Sexes about Billie Jean King is a very relevant movie for this specific time in America. It felt very much like my personal mission to create a powerful voice where society and the law work together to achieve full recognition of the civil rights and human rights of the LGBT community and our next generation .
What did you wear the last time you went out to dinner? White jeans and periwinkle toile cotton pique jacket made by me.
Where did you go and what did you order? Le Bilboquet on Madison. I ordered a skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and fries.
What is your favorite beverage of choice? An Aperol Spritz (Prosecco and Seltzer).
What is your personal theme song/anthem? Titanium by Sia.
Where was the last place you traveled to? The Bahamas.
What was your favorite part of the trip and what were you wearing at the time? Being on the beach with my daughter in my Blue Lips bikini.
Who do you follow on Instagram for style inspiration (any artist, stylist, photographer, publication etc)? Honestly I do not follow anyone on Instagram for style inspiration and if I did follow someone it would be the late and great Isabella Blow who I had the honor of working with for many years in London.
If you were a car what would you be? A vintage BMW 507 Roadster.
If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner who would you invite and why? DaVinci because he was the ultimate Genius of both the 20th and 21st century he was the ultimate renaissance man as am I. No one has been able to accomplish what he single-handedly accomplished in his lifetime for the benefit of mankind.
Fill in the Blanks!
The last thing I bought online was Watercolor and drawing paper but I prefer to buy oils and
acrylics at the store.
I spent too much money on developing textiles but I saved a lot of money on basic color silks.
I would love to be on the cover of this magazine Forbes wearing my own creation.
I wear this fragrance Masculine Pluriel by Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris but I love smelling this fragrance on someone else Ambre Nuit by Christian Dior on other people.
Thanks for letting me interview your closet Franco. I’m glad I got to know you better too. Now would you mind if I borrowed any of the pale blue floral looks from the Franco Lacosta SS18 Collection? Or maybe all of them! They are all too gorgeous it's hard for me to pick just one!
Okay Ann! Thank you for the Interview!
