Today I’m meeting Cristiano Gerardi in Stockholm. Cristiano is a model and student of architecture. I loved Cristiano's appearance on Moto Guo's runway during Milan Fashion week this winter- I had to paint this look! He asked me to mail him the painting in exchange for some Milan fashion week trade secrets and of course this interview! Follow him @luomoserio.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you. Can I interview your closet? Go ahead!
What’s your favorite T-Shirt? Where and why did you buy it? It's a Groucho Marx T-shirt. A special girl gave it to me. She had it in her closet, she had found it at a flea market. That is Groucho Marx, the assistant of the nightmares’ investigator Dylan Dog, saying "they all fall on your feet! What do you do to women, do you trip them?".
Are you a sweater person or a sweatshirt person? I am a sweater person. Black turtleneck sweaters are part of my dress code.
What did you wear on your last girl’s night or guy’s night out? I toke out of my closet this acid green snowboard coat for the kall svenska väder! Then I wore this red striped sweater that I think goes well together. And some vintage Lee jeans I bought in Hamburg.
What did you do together? We went to a nice bar in Milan, it’s called L'Ov. Then on the way home we bought a bottle of Amaro and got really drunk on the streets. We rode around on a shopping cart together and exchanged eyeglasses for fun. We ended up kissing against a shop window with a huge skull inside!
What drink do you like to order on a night out? I like White Russian (as a real drugo) or gin tonic (that is really popular in Milan). Else I also love to just drink a lot of wine! Red Italian wine or a good Prosecco from Treviso, my hometown.
What music do you enjoy on a night out? I really enjoy dub music. Else some electronic like Nicolas Jaar.
Where do you want to travel to next? I am going to Helsinki in a couple of weeks, then to India on April!
What essentials would you pack for the trip? I like to backpack, bringing just the essentials. I don’t like rolling suitcases. In my duffel bag there’s my analog Leica, a sketchbook with my pencil case, headphones, a book and few clothes.
What non-essential thing would you pack for this trip? My red raincoat- I hope it never gets outside of the bag!
What did you wear to school when you were young? At high school I usually wore high Converse All Star shoes, t-shirts I made (like a yellow one with nuclear symbol whit a big 'NO’ under, that was the answer for a referendum on the topic we had) and skinny jeans.
What is the coolest thing you wore in High School? A t-shirt I made, it was black with a Blues Brothers’ stencil on it.
What is the biggest splurge or investment piece you purchased? I bought a silver bracelet in Bangkok, at Cha Tu Chak flea market (the coolest I have ever seen!). It was 30€, not so expansive but, once you pay a full dinner just 4€, it really feels a lot. But I really like it and I still wear it. It reminds me of that beautiful trip!
What is your favorite fashion bargain? How much do you wear it? I got this super nice hat the first time I went to Morocco, it was a graduation trip with my friends! It was such a blast! I bought it from a European freak living in Essaouira and I just paid 5€. The best thing is that it is cotton, so I basically wear it whenever.
What do you wear when you work out? I don’t work out. I like cycling though. I just put on a zippered jacket for city bikers not to get super sweaty. When it’s not hot, I wear just a t-shirt and an overcoat or jacket. No other layers are needed.
What do you wear to the grocery store? I don’t have a chill out dressing code unfortunately. When I get home I just take off the shoes and the belt. So basically at the grocery store I wear something like that.
What shoes do you wear in the rain? I have some black really fancy Camper that I bought for cold temperatures that are also water proof! I don’t mind getting them dirty. I don’t like clean shoes.
What shoes do you wear for a party? Actually I have a theory on dressing. Do you know Adolf Loos? He was an architect that lived a hundred years ago. He was kind of crazy and a genius as well. He wrote about dressing, he used to say that, as a building should do, one must not stand out with his external aspect and that, at the contrary, the most
civil way of dressing was the suit. So a house, as a person, should have a generic aspect, all white with no decoration for instance, and express itself just in the interior. I don’t feel as much fundamentalist as he was, but his opinion really influenced me. I don’t like people to judge me too much before I start talking, I prefer to be sober and keep opened all the possibilities.
If I were to dress in a really extravagant way; then I would just attract people that dress similarly, that are probably the people I like the most; but maybe an elderly on the bus would be really rude with me just because she doesn’t like how I appear. Then I try to be really generic all the time, still with good design stuff: I have a drawer of white t-shirts and the other with Cos clothes. So to answer your question I don’t have party shoes because basically I wear always the same shoes. Maybe at least at a party I
would put together some nice stuff I have.
What do you wish you had in your closet but don’t have? I don’t even have a closet actually. I am in exchange here in Stockholm for a semester and I just brought a few things. But I feel ok with that. And it makes sense basing on my theory on clothing. I don’t like shopping just to have new stuff. I don’t like consumerist culture.
Which celebrity’s closet would you raid? I like how architects dress like. I think Thomas Heatherwick has a cool style!
What did you last give away in your closet and who did you give it to? I left a red sweater at a girl’s bedroom recently…
What is the best piece of clothing or accessory that someone else bought for you? I really like this t-shirt my ex girlfriend just gave me. We are still in a good relationship!
What piece(s) of jewelry do you wear everyday? That bracelet I got in Thailand and a black Muji watch.
Do you wear a fragrance? Nope, but I would like to.
Thanks for letting me interview your closet Cristiano. I’m glad I got to know you better too. Now would you mind if I borrowed the yellow t-shirt you made?
