Today I'm meeting Chris Heyn son of the CEO of the clothing brand Southern Tide. A beach boy at heart, Chris has carved his own path in the city working in real estate as well as curating @beefwand, a tongue-in-cheek one stop shop for pop culture memes. Chris is a budding NYC fashion influencer who seamlessly blends streetstyle trends with some Montauk realness. Follow him @chrisheynjr and @beefwand.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Chris. Can I interview your closet? Yes!
What shows are you most looking forward to this SS20 season in New York? KidSuper. Some of my friends know Colm Dillane and have been a big supporter of his for a while. I love how he can do a Paris show, and come back to New York and do a show with donated vintage clothes in just three weeks and include the local community. The shows are very uplifting and supportive, and I think we need that right now in fashion.
What are some of your favorite places to hang out during Fashion Week? The Mercer Hotel can be a little chaotic, but also a fascinating scene to sit and people watch. So many people on their A game trying to impress or get noticed. Ludlow House is a great little escape and a cozy place to unwind. No pictures are being taken so it’s a bit of a safe space for some as well. I also love their dumplings.
What will you personally be wearing during fashion week? Sneakers and bucket hats! Or loafers and retro supreme t-shirts. White jeans are also a staple year round.
Tell us about your favorite NYFW after party! The DKNY party was a blast. The Martinez brothers opened up which was awesome. I love house music and it set the vibe for the night. I love when fashion mixes the combination of celebrity and personality, with people who just have awesome style. here was a lot of fluidity at the party and a slew of characters, and who doesn’t want to meet Donna Karen?
Your poolside/beachside photos are so enviable! Tellme about your favorite beaches and your ideal poolside attire! Thank you! I grew up every summer going to Newport Beach in California, so beach culture and the water in general has always been a HUGE part of my life and draw for me. I am happiest and my best self when I am at the beach or by a pool. I love Wiborg beach in East Hampton as well. My boyfriend and I have a hard time deciding between Wiborg and Georgica beach, because they are both so beautiful. Regarding poolside attire, I love an Orlebar Brown bathing suit or Saturdays NYC bathing suit, with some Gucci loafers or mules, and a fun slightly buttoned linen shirt. I also love polos, and the past few years have been really bullish on Moncler polos. I never forget a good pair of sunglasses. I love Oliver Peoples or Warby Parker.
@Beefwand features everything from JFK Junior and Carolyn Bessette in their sunnies to Winnie the Pooh eating honey. What draws you to certain images? What do you want your followers to take away from them? I suppose its just letting your thoughts and creativity flow. I started off using it as a general stream of consciousness and a bit of a mood board. It’s like my visual version of word vomit. I try to just promote freedom and happiness and finding an aesthetic that works for you and makes you excited. It’s a combination of memories and images I relate to, to feelings and sayings, to showing my less filtered self without caring about the judgement.
Do you prefer television or movies? Which if any movies or shows has inspired your style? Typically I am more of a movie guy, but Don Draper in Mad Men is a character that shaped me long ago. Of course his style is more ‘60s – ‘70s, but it’s so classic and simple and chic. For movies, Dicky Greenleaf in The Talented My Ripley is a style icon for me.
What song keeps showing up the most on your playlist? I’ll Be Good (Tom Bull Remix) – Jaymes Young is a defining song for me. It’s the most played song of my life and somehow I never get sick of it.
What is something one of your friends has in their closet that you want to borrow and never return? My father has a retro Dior nautical sweater that is from the late 80s and is unreal. He never wears it and put it to rest in the attic long ago, but I found it and have been borrowing it here and there.
Who would star as you in a movie about your life and most importantly, what would they wear? I’m sure I’m not the first one to want Ryan Gosling to star as me, but if he’s not available I’m feeling maybe Daniel Day Lewis in there will be blood, but dressed in more Bape and Stone island.
Fill in the blanks!
My favorite thing about living in the city is how accessible everything is but the most annoying thing about living in the city is the lack of space (closet space too).
I should throw away my suits but I could never part with my day job.
I spend too much money on shoes but save a lot of money on socks, groceries, and cleaning supplies.
I would love to go on vacation here French Polynesian islands and bring my boyfriend, 5 of my best friends, and Kanye West.
