Today I’m meeting Rolly Robinson in New York City. Rolly is an artist and we connected because of our mutual love of fashion and art! I'm extremely envious of Rolly's bag collection and ability to live in a magical universe that has been so exquisitely communicated in performance pieces as well as fashion illustrations- you need to follow Rolly @rollyrobinson for non-stop inspiration where "more is more!"
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you Rolly. Can I interview your closet? Yes.
What’s your favorite T-Shirt? Where and why did you buy it? My favorite t-shirt, is a black Wavves band shirt with white drawn illustrations of two cats on it, declaring how much they hate the band Wavves, to each other. My best friend gave it to me. I don’t know why I love it so much. I hate graphic tees, and I don’t even listen to Wavves.
Are you a sweater person or a sweatshirt person? Sweater, hands down!
What did you wear on your last date? I wore my favorite striped, wide-leg trousers that my mom gave me, with my favorite grey sweater tied around my waist, a Chinese printed robe, and two fur coats on top. One was Tibetan lamb and the other was a rabbit fur trench. I also borrowed my boyfriend’s western style, pointed toe mules. To seal the deal, I toted my python Proenza Schouler PS11 bag.
How did the date go? What did you do? The date was fun. My boyfriend and I went to this really cute Italian spot on the Upper East Side.
What do you like to drink while getting ready for a night out? I love drinking a cocktail of some sort, like a dark and stormy, or an IPA, because those get me going, fast. That rarely ever happens though, because what I usually stock in the house is a red wine, usually a cabernet or pinot noir.
What music do you listen to while getting ready for a night out? Disco! Disco! Disco!
Where was the last place you traveled to? My partner and I just recently took a trip to Japan for two weeks. We stayed in Osaka, Tokyo, and Kyoto.
What was the most important thing you packed? That’s tough! It’s a tie between three things: 1. My two vintage Polaroid Spectra cameras. 2. My work phone, because it had full service on it the entire trip. 3. A steamer.
What was the most non-essential thing you shouldn’t have packed but packed anyway? I packed my hot glue gun with the intention of making headpieces to shoot on this trip, but that definitely didn’t happen. I took a full break from being a personality, and just soaked in every moment we had there. It wasn’t about creating editorial looks, and shooting on location. It was about spending time together and enjoying our vacation.
What rules if any did you have about getting dressed when you were young? My clothes were NEVER, by any means, allowed to be wrinkled. That remains true to this day.
What is the first item of clothing you bought with your own money? Well, I didn't really have “my own money” until I was 19. That’s when I first started working, and I hated it. I think the first thing I got though, was a plaid bomber jacket.
What is the biggest splurge or investment piece you purchased? Ah, there’s way too many of those to keep count, haha. A large portion of my wardrobe is a splurge. When it comes to accessories, I’m reckless. I’ll spend any amount on the right handbag. I’m a total bag lady.
Do you feel the investment has been worthwhile? 100%! Whenever I open my closet, I smile. I’ve accumulated quite the collection and I’ve worked hard for all of it.
What is your favorite fashion bargain? How much do you wear it? While I was in Japan, I purchased two brand new Miu Miu bags on consignment and I absolutely love them! I also got these AMAZING throwback Balenciaga glasses for a good price. I try not to wear things a lot in order for them to last. My most recent steal is a piece I got from the Dolce & Gabbana sample sale. It’s from the Spring 2012 collection. It’s an orange pvc top with black knitted details on it. I haven’t worn it yet though. It. Is. Major!
Who was your style icon as a youngster? Honestly, my mom. I would always go into her closet and try on some new pair of heels she got. Sometimes I would even just sift through her dry cleaning and admire all her gorgeous jacket sets and dresses. She really knew how to dress, and always stole the show. She’s where I get it from.
Who is one of your style icons now? Tilda Swinton. She’s always dressed so impeccably, and decadently chic. I like how simple, and gender fluid she is.
What do you wear when you work out? I don’t work out.
What do you wear to the grocery store? Kimonos with wide-leg trousers, or a dress and platforms.
What shoes do you wear when the weather is bad? I like to stick with a black sneaker or Dr. Martens.
What shoes do you wear when you want to show off? I live in New York City, and it destroys shoes. I don’t really invest in flashy footwear for that reason.
What do you wish you had in your closet but don’t have? Every piece from the Chanel Spring/ Summer Haute Couture 2009 show.
What do you have in your closet that you should throw away but still haven’t? An unopened box of mail.
What’s in your closet that you inherited from another person and still like to wear? My mom gave me this black and white, Navajo-y jacket that she used to wear when I was growing up. It’s gorgeous. I always feel like some wandering desert princess when I wear it.
What is the best piece of clothing or accessory that someone else bought for you? For My birthday one year, my boyfriend bought me this beautiful blush pink Christian Dior house robe.
What piece(s) of jewelry do you wear everyday? I always wear my diamond ring with my two favorite sterling silver bracelets on my right hand. On my left hand, I wear my gold ring with a centered ruby and diamonds on both sides of it.
Do you wear a fragrance? I own over 100 fragrances. So, definitely. Currently, I smell of “Fields Of Rubus” by Kerosene. It’s a sinfully delicious and dirty tobacco wood, cedar, and patchouli blend.
