Zynani Nakhid

Today I’m meeting Zynani Nakhid in New Orleans, LA.  Zynani is a Designer & Fashion/Hair Stylist and I bumped into her in the ladies’ room at the Ace Hotel.  She was in the midst of styling a good friend’s head wrap.  I asked her friend where she got her beautiful halter top and Zynani said “I made it!” Amazed by her talent and beautiful style I’ve been following Zynani ever since @znaesthetics on Instagram.

Hello, It’s Ann.  It’s great to see you.  Can I interview your closet?

What’s your favorite T-Shirt? Where and why did you buy it?  A denim snap-up long sleeve shirt that I found at Walmart for $5. Sshhh! Don’t tell anyone.

Are you a sweater person or a sweatshirt person? Sweatshirt unless it’s an oversized sweater and in that case it’s oversized sweater all day.

What did you wear on your last date?  My favorite grey wool oversized v-neck sweater, ripped white skinny jeans, and flat black ankle boots.

How did the date go? What did you do?  Barrel Proof. I went on my first and only Tinder date. We sat and talked for hours over Cognac about every aspect of life. Might have made a lifelong friend but I’m still single.

What do you like to drink while getting ready for a night out?  Champagne & St. Germain.

What music do you listen to while getting ready for a night out?  Depends on how I’m feeling. Could be anything from Frank Sinatra to Future. Google Play is my music app of choice and I can pick a playlist based off of my mood. It usually hits the music spot no matter how I’m feeling and my bff is a Dj RQaway so I always have cool mixes to listen to if Google play isn’t getting the job done.

Where was the last place you traveled to?  New York. I was featured in the latest TJ Maxx ad campaign called “Road to Real’ and it premiered at Sky Gallery in New York a couple weeks ago.

What was the most important thing you packed?  My latest line of chokers. I didn’t plan on trying to sell them, I just wanted to bring them with me to show a few people and I ended up selling a couple of them. (Two of these gorgeous chokers are featured in the corners of this illustration and are available on Zynani's website).

What was the most non-essential thing you shouldn’t have packed but packed anyway?  The 3 extra outfits on top of my usual 2 extra outfits that I knew I wouldn’t need but packed anyway. Just in case.

What rules if any did you have about getting dressed when you were young?  I wore uniforms to school so when I had a chance to show my style I wanted to be a show stopper. That was my rule, go big or go home. I still have a certain flair of panache but no show stopping vibes.

What is the first item of clothing you bought with your own money?  I didn’t remember this one but I asked my mother and she knew. LOL! She says it was a pink eyelet dress to wear to a concert in Philadelphia. I remembered the concert but I didn’t remember buying the dress with my own money because I was only in the 6th grade.

What is the biggest splurge or investment piece you purchased?  A strappy lace bra and matching panty from Agent Provocateur. I’m more of a logical shopper, but I like what I like and I felt like I could not live without the set. One of my favorite personal items to this day.

Do you feel the investment has been worthwhile?  Most definitely. That bra and panty set makes me feel like I have a secret superpower when I’m wearing it.

What is your favorite fashion bargain? How much do you wear it?  A cropped navy blue fur coat that was on the sale rack at Haus 131 on Magazine St. for $75. I wear it way too often for New Orleans weather.

Who was your style icon as a youngster?  Kimora Lee Simmons. She was just fly and on her business.

Who is one of your style icons now?  Tai Beauchamp. She is so effortlessly chic, no matter what kind of vibe she’s serving and she is definitely a boss.

What do you wear when you work out? When I workout, I workout at home so I wear a sports bra, tights and grip socks.

What do you wear to the grocery store?  My grocery store runs are always on the fly so, it’s whatever I have on for the day. But, if I had to chose an outfit it would be a cute jogging suit, a baseball cap  and some tennis shoes.

What shoes do you wear when the weather is bad?  Whatever my everyday shoe is, which happens to currently be my black Coach Trainers.

What shoes do you wear when you want to show off?  Lately it’s been my clear ankle Perspex boots. They make me feel so saucy.

What do you wish you had in your closet but don’t have?  About a year or two ago I tried on a Mongolian SheepSkin Coat that was dyed a merlot color at a vintage store on Magazine Street. It fit me like it was a custom order just for me. I left the coat in the store that day with a promise to myself that if it was still on my mind at the end of the week, I would go back and get it. It wasn’t there when I went back though. It was such a beautiful coat.

What do you have in your closet that you should throw away but still haven’t?  I try to comb through my closet every couple of months to purge things that should be trashed or sent to a new home. So, at the moment there’s nothing in there worth a toss.

What’s in your closet that you inherited from another person and still like to wear?  Bra’s from my sister. As we’ve gotten older and grown into bigger sizes, she always gives me the bra’s that she hasn’t worn yet that she can no longer fit or are way too cute to toss out. But, my sister and I somehow always seem to switch sizes. So every now and then we trade items from our closets.

What is the best piece of clothing or accessory that someone else bought for you?  One of my best friends took me to a store called The Bead Shop on Magazine Street for my birthday and let me pick all the charms I wanted, and I got to make my own charm bracelet. My favorite piece of jewelry ever.

What piece(s) of jewelry do you wear everyday?  My gold cartouche of my name on a simple gold chain, that my father bought me while in Egypt.

Do you wear a fragrance?  Yes, I feel naked without perfume. It’s what completes your presence, you know what I mean? My favorite fragrance is Lola by Marc Jacobs.

Thanks for letting me interview your closet Zynani.  I’m glad I got to know you better too.  Now would you mind if I borrowed your blue Haus 131 fur coat?
