Today I’m meeting Sean Swanson in Seattle, Washington. Sean is a model and I saw him walking in the David Hart SS17 runway show. I had to paint him because he looked so rad! I mailed him the painting and we've been in touch ever since. It turns out he's an artist as well. To learn more about Sean and his impressive portfolio follow him @official_seanswanson on Instagram.
Hello, It’s Ann. It’s great to see you. Can I interview your closet?
What’s your favorite T-Shirt? Where and why did you buy it? For about 5 years I have had this beautiful indigo dyed oversized tee that has a neck that's in between a crew and a scoop. I wear it to castings for Fashion Week all the time! You would never believe it's made by KR3W. I was working at Zumiez in a mall outside of Seattle. On my lunch breaks I would wander kitty corner from my store to a local, upscale streetwear shop called the Zebra Club where I had a good friend that eventually sold me on this shirt even though it was the wrong size!
Are you a sweater person or a sweatshirt person? I am totally a sweater person. Specifically turtlenecks. They look sophisticated but can be dressed in a way that is street chic and totally not tacky. I love wearing pieces that people generally hold reservations about!
What did you wear on your last date? On my last date I wore a charcoal turtleneck under a black Uniqlo driver's coat (think peacoat-esque), a pair of black Levi 522s, and a pair of Commes Des Garçon x Converse high top sneakers with red/dark red HUF leaf socks.
How did the date go? What did you do? Jeez, can't even remember the details beside my outfit lmao.
What do you like to drink while getting ready for a night out? To ensure the best possible night for myself I always perfume with Kombucha or really strong ginger beer to give my gut a boost of good bacteria aka the best chance for lasting hours of... Dancing/adventuring.
What music do you listen to while getting ready for a night out? I LOVE listening to electronic music of all sorts to get ready but because that is so broad of a genre is narrow it down to Daft Punk at a fairly loud volume because music is better when played loudly.
Where was the last place you traveled to? I last traveled to Breckendrige, Colorado with my girlfriend (at the time) and her family where I shredded the beautiful Rocky mountains on skis... Although I am from Seattle where we have amazing snow within a 1-2 hour drive I hadn't ever tried snow sports! Very happy I got to see if all the buzz about how was really warranted.
What was the most important thing you packed? The most important thing I packed was most definitely a faux-Sherpa lined hoodie from American Apparel. This thing kept me toasty walking from our hotel to the slops and around the ski village.
What was the most non-essential thing you shouldn’t have packed but packed anyway?Probably my iPad Pro... I recently made a switch from real watercolor painting to digital painting and design and I wanted to have the ability to make some art without the mess :)
What rules if any did you have about getting dressed when you were young? My only personal rule was to leave the house with shoes and without mismatched socks.
What is the first item of clothing you bought with your own money? There were a few things from PacSun I bought on my first shopping trip with my fashion forward friend when we were 14... A pair of regular fit jeans, a Jamaican flag colored belt, and a pair of slip on Vans classics. Those were my first pair of jeans ever! Before I wore a lot of sweatpants and cargo pants haha.
What is the biggest splurge or investment piece you purchased? My biggest purchases have all been raw denim. My most expensive investment were a couple pair of Organic, Raw Nudie jeans!
Do you feel the investment has been worthwhile? I have since grown out of them in fashion preference and size... I didn't realize how big a difference working out could have on my own Jean size. Instead of skinny fit jeans, I opt for regular as the fit is more comfortable and I like the larger silhouette on my athletic type body. But I am still obsessed with denim and indigo in general so will continue to pay good money for boutique denim.
What is your favorite fashion bargain? How much do you wear it? My favorite fashion bargain is this red plaid flannel-lined vintage Levi's jacket that I have big plans of customizing for... I have had numerous pins and patches on it but I am going to be painting a huge rose on the back because I LOVE FLOWERS!
Who was your style icon as a youngster? I didn't develop my sense of style until my teens but when I was looking for inspiration I found a lot in the way of Burberry models on their posters in the mall... Usually younger guys that were as slim as I was wearing tailored clothing under large coats.
Who is one of your style icons now? I am always dialing in my aesthetic sensibility and find that minimalism and workwear tend to speak to me the most so when I think of examples they would come from James Dean and actually most of the young adults in Japan. I don't follow many celebrities but I also have enjoyed seeing how Lucky Blue is making waves with his style in the media.
What do you wear when you work out? I wear these radical multicolored Nike FlyKnit Chukka trainers, drifit Nike Shorts, and then any sleeveless shirt I have (seems to be an American flag shirt quite often).
What do you wear to the grocery store? I usually go to the store after a workout so see above question.
What shoes do you wear when the weather is bad? I have a versatile Nike running base layer I throw under a raw denim sweater followed by that Uniqlo driver coat and a indigo knit beanie by Samurai Jeans. For bottoms I use uniqlo's thermal running tights under raw denim and finished with a chunky pair of Doc Martens or Blundstone Chelsea boots.
What shoes do you wear when you want to show off? I love wearing my CDGxConverse sneakers with a otherwise formal outfit... Super playful, yet not underdressed.
What do you wish you had in your closet but don’t have?A vintage leather motto jacket is my deepest desire.
What do you have in your closet that you should throw away but still haven’t? I have done a lot of thinning thru my closet recently but I still have some graphic tees from my teens that I am looking to repurpose. Probably going to tear them up into workout shirts.
What’s in your closet that you inherited from another person and still like to wear? My Raw indigo Samurai Jeans knit beanie came right out my brother's wardrobe... It's my go to accessory.
What is the best piece of clothing or accessory that someone else bought for you? It would have to be a pair of vintage 1955 cone mill denim Levi's my friend gifted me when we were in Tokyo this past November... Such a gorgeous and timeless pair of jeans!
What piece(s) of jewelry do you wear everyday? I don't regularly wear jewelry. However, I have considered getting a septum piercing... I have always loved the way those look.
Do you wear a fragrance? I am not one to wear fragrance. I am a hippy granola-loving boy who prefers essential oil hydrosols and sprays especially the ones that remind me of home like cedar, spruce, juniper, or pine.
Thanks for letting me interview your closet Sean. I’m glad I got to know you better too. Now would you mind if I borrowed your Levi's jacket once you finish painting the rose ?
