Today I’m meeting Micaela Lade  in Cambridge, MA.  Micaela is a sales manager for Phaidon and we became friends studying for Art History classes at Boston College.  We also have a shared love/obsession with collage! Follow Micaela @mmkkll

Hello, It’s Ann.  It’s great to see you.  Can I interview your closet?

What’s your favorite T-Shirt? Where and why did you buy it?  My favorite t-shirt would have to be a white linen tee with cuffed sleeves by Frame. I bought it on a whim at Century21 in NYC and it has truly become a summer wardrobe workhorse! A runner-up would be my two striped t-shirts from St. James that have dropped shoulders and are so flattering.

Are you a sweater person or a sweatshirt person?  I love sweatshirts and sweaters equally, but I have more sweaters, so I guess that makes me more of a sweater person. My current favorite sweater is an oversized black faux sherpa number by Priory, a Canadian brand.

What did you wear on your last date?  I wore a pretty casual outfit on my last date: an oversized cream dress by Black Crane over a pair of slim black Acne jeans, and my trusty No. 6 clog boots in black leather.

How did the date go? What did you do?  It went well! My long-term boyfriend and I went to Little Donkey, a new spot up the street, for dinner. It was delicious and we had a couple of great conversations that made the evening memorable.

What do you like to drink while getting ready for a night out?  My favorite early-evening cocktail would have to be some Champagne mixed with elderflower liqueur. Simple but delicious!

What music do you listen to while getting ready for a night out?  I usually turn on a playlist from WFMU, my favorite radio station. DJ Trouble has my favorite show on that station, so I usually stream one of her playlists, which includes a lot of ‘60s girl pop and French songs. She’s also known for playing some obscure tracks that always have me discovering new artists.

Where was the last place you traveled to?  I travel a lot for work, but the last placed I traveled to for fun was to New Jersey for my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding.

What was the most important thing you packed?  I guess it was my outfit for the wedding: a dark gold sequined gown by Amsale and a pair of nude suede strappy pumps by Sam Edelman.

What was the most non-essential thing you shouldn’t have packed but packed anyway?  Hmm…maybe my Moleskine planner? I didn’t have a ton of time to write in it, but one of my habits is bringing it with me everywhere.

What rules if any did you have about getting dressed when you were young?  I was SO into matchy-matching. I have a book that my mom gave me when my sister was born, to record all of the surrounding emotions and feelings. One of the questions asked about the outfit I was wearing when I met her for the first time, and I remember exactly what it was: a baby pink sweatshirt from my elementary school, a black/hot pink/bright blue colorblocked turtleneck, hot pink leggings, white and hot pink scrunch socks, and white leather Keds low-tops with multicolored rhinestones on the tops. Oh, and one pink plastic earring (I didn’t have my ears pierced yet, so this was likely co-opted from Pretty Pretty Princess.

What is the first item of clothing you bought with your own money?  I didn’t really start buying my own clothing until I was a senior in high school. I actually saved all of the money I made at my summer jobs until that year! I don’t remember exactly what the first item of clothing was that I bought with my own money, but I do remember being really proud of a pair of purple chinos from Abercrombie & Fitch that I bought with my own money that year.

What is the biggest splurge or investment piece you purchased?  The biggest splurge I’ve made has to be the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag that I bought myself a couple of years ago. It is still the most money I’ve ever spent on one item!

Do you feel the investment has been worthwhile?  Yes – I still carry the bag quite frequently and it has held up really nicely, quality-wise. I don’t take large purchases lightly…it’s a pretty big deal for me to part with that much money at once.

What is your favorite fashion bargain? How much do you wear it?  I read the book Overdressed several years ago and it completely changed my approach to buying clothing, shoes, and accessories. I hardly shop at fast-fashion chains anymore, preferring to buy fewer items from higher-end brands, always on sale or even secondhand. I can think of a few different examples of bargains that I’ve found, but one of them has to be a brand-new black & white Marimekko polka dot tunic top that I bought for about $30 at a consignment store (it retailed for $148 at the Marimekko store, where I had been eyeing it for a while.) I have to wash it pretty much every time I do laundry, which means I wear it once every other week!

Who was your style icon as a youngster?  When I was younger, I really idolized Sofia Coppola. I thought she was so cool – and still do! I have been really into making collages since middle school, and Sofia has featured heavily in them over the years.

Who is one of your style icons now?  As I’ve grown older, I’ve enjoyed watching street style stars like Veronika Heilbrunner and Hanneli Mustaparta take fashion risks. They inspire me to take more risks as well!

What do you wear when you work out?  I typically wear a sports bra, a long-sleeved tee, and leggings with running shoes and a thin fleece. (In the summer, I wear the sports bra & sneakers with a tank top and running shorts). Some of my favorite sportswear brands I own are Outdoor Voices – their leggings and sports bras are the best!, Nike, and Under Armour.

What do you wear to the grocery store?  I typically do a big grocery trip on Friday night (woo woo!) and then make smaller trips a couple of other times during the week, sometimes during my lunch hour since I work from home. This means that I usually wear whatever I’m wearing that day. My basic uniform during this time of year (winter) consists of jeans, a button-down shirt or popover, a sweater or sweatshirt, and boots.

What shoes do you wear when the weather is bad?  I own two pairs of LLBean duck boots – one low “gumshoe” version and one higher waxed canvas boot – and can usually be found in those when it’s wet or snowy out. If the snow is very high, I usually swap them for my 11-year-old green Hunter wellies that I wear with thick wool socks. I am still on the hunt for a great pair of true snow boots.

What shoes do you wear when you want to show off?  I don’t tend to want to show off very much, but I guess if I did, I’d wear one of my louder shoes. A recent favorite in this category is my Loeffler Randall floral platform sandals, which I scored for 90% off on Amazon.

What do you wish you had in your closet but don’t have?  I have been looking for the perfect top-handle handbag that I can wear with a wool cape from Fidelity that doesn’t get enough play – most of my bags are cross-body styles that don’t work well with capes. I love the Mansur Gavriel Lady Bag, but I already have a couple of bags from MG and feel it is a bit excessive to go for a third. I’m on the lookout if anyone has recommendations!

What do you have in your closet that you should throw away but still haven’t?  I go through my closet pretty regularly and sell or donate items that I don’t wear anymore, so this is a pretty tough question. I guess I would say my ugly rainbow skirt from Oilily (made out of bandanas!) that I got when I was working there in 2004 – it still fits and I keep hanging onto it because I am nostalgic to my core, and it makes me smile! Another piece that I rarely wear but feel connected to is a Breton-striped swing top that I bought at Beams in Japan last year. I can only wear it over a dress, which feels limiting, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it because it reminds me of our amazing trip to Japan.

What’s in your closet that you inherited from another person and still like to wear?  My friend gave me a pair of APC jeans that he didn’t wear anymore because he didn’t like the way they fit. They are very slightly broken in, in just the perfect way. Speaking of literal inheritances, I can't forget the mink coat my grandmother gave me. It is currently at my parents’ house in NJ, but I need to remember to bring it up to Boston on my next trip home. I don’t feel great about the fact that it’s real fur, but it’s so warm and very chic, too.

What is the best piece of clothing or accessory that someone else bought for you?  My boyfriend has excellent taste and always hits the nail on the head whenever he buys pieces for me. This past Christmas he gave me a pair of navy & black sneakers – a collaboration between Vans and Engineered Garments – and they have gotten a ton of wear already.

What piece(s) of jewelry do you wear everyday?  I wear gold open hoop earrings from Melissa Joy Manning (or gold flat dot studs from Yayoi Forest, another lovely gift from my boyfriend), a gold asymmetrical initial necklace from Maya Brenner, a gold initial ring from Melissa Joy Manning on my left middle finger, and a gold/diamond cluster ring by Jerry Grant on my right ring finger. I also typically wear my stainless steel Gucci bracelet watch on my left wrist.

Do you wear a fragrance?  Yes, I love fragrances and always switch mine up. For the past couple of years I have been partial to MCMC x Mociun Fragrance No. 1, and have been lusting over DS & Durga’s Coriander for about the same amount of time (though I don’t own it…yet!).

Thanks for letting me interview your closet, Micaela.  I’m glad I got to know you better too.  Now would you mind if I borrowed your Acne jeans ?
